Brownies

              WELCOME

Did you know that Brownies have been around for 94 years?

Brownies first started in 1914, except they weren’t called Brownies then, they were called Rosebuds, but it wasn’t long before they changed their name to Brownies.

Being a Brownie is great fun!
There's so much to do with your  Brownie friends:

  • Wear your smart Brownie uniform
  • Choose the parts of the uniform you wear.
  • Be part of a special group called a Six.
  • Play games and do all sorts of exciting things outside.
  • Go on Pack Holiday or maybe even camp.
  • Hold a Pow-wow to decide what your Brownies will do.
  • Get badges for doing things you really enjoy.
  • Have a special book telling you what being a Brownie is all about.
  • Buy your own Brownie magazine!

You can be a Brownie if you are aged between 7 and 10 years old.  Brownie Packs  usually meet each week for an hour or two. You will be a member of a small group of other Brownies called a SIX, and there will be up to 3 other Sixes in your Pack.  These Sixes have names like Imps, Pixies, Rabbits or Badgers.  Each Six has a Sixer and Seconder who are older and are able to help the younger Brownies. The members of your SIX will be your friends, and you will play games and do crafts together.
Brownies are great fun, you will learn lots of new things every week and have fun at the same time.  Sometimes Brown Owl will ask other people to come to Brownie meetings and show you things or teach us new skills. It could be a Policeman who will talk to us about keeping safe on the roads, or a Fireman to show us how to prevent fires at home.  At other times you might go out on trips, say to go Swimming, Skating, to the Theatre or Pantomime, or even visit Guides at Camp!

During your first few Brownie meetings you will be getting ready to make your Promise. It is the really special bit about being a Brownie.
When you have made your Promise, you get your own Promise badge. It has three leaves on it, one for each part of your Promise. The star is for your Brownie Law. The yellow shows you are a Brownie! Other members of the guiding family in the UK wear a badge like this but it is a different colour. Guiding members all over the world wear badges with three leaves as well. Once you have made your Brownie Promise you can wear your Promise badge and you will be part of our great guiding family

On 22nd February each year, Brownies Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world celebrate Thinking Day.  Some Units will be exchanging postcards with Brownies and Guides from other parts of the world who are members of WAGGGS..  This helps them remember that there are Brownies living far away who have different sorts of lives, but who are still our sister Brownies.

The promise

I promise that I will do my best:
To love my God,
To serve the Queen and my country,
To help other people
and
To keep the Brownie Guide Law

The Brownie Guide Law

A Brownie Guide thinks of others before herself and does a Good Turn every day.

Pack holidays

The biggest adventure you can have as a Brownie is to go away on Brownie holiday or camp. They are always really great fun and there are lots of exciting games, activities and crafts to do when you are there.

Sometimes you will stay inside and sleep on beds.  There's often quite a few of you together in one room, so it will be FUN!

Your Pack Holiday may have a theme, so you will possibly all need to be different characters like Hermione or Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter!   You will certainly be doing lots of new things you have never tried before.

Before you go you will have a list to tell you what you will need to take with you.  You will also help decide things like what you're doing each day and what you'll eat.   Each day there may be a few jobs which will need done, like peeling potatoes and washing up!

Oh Lord our God
Thy children call.
 Grant us Thy peace,
And bless us all.

Good-night
